Purpose
The Equestrian Specialist is a part-time position that provides opportunities for Sipe's Orchard Home's clients to participate positively in a variety of horse related activities, including ground training, grooming, riding, horse care, and cart rides. Activities are geared for the age, interests, and abilities of the participants, who range from the preschoolers in the Tyndall Center to the school-age summer campers to the young adults in the Houston Center.
The Equestrian Specialist may offer riding lessons or other equestrian activities to the community.
This position also provides oversight of all livestock and related care, keep, and hardware.
Position Requirements
- Knowledge and competence in the care, training. and riding of horses.
- Ability to plan and coordinate activities with program staff.
- Must be able to work an irregular schedule to accommodate the needs of the animals and the programs.
- Valid NC Driver's License.
- Dependable character as verified by pre-employment reference check, including employer references, criminal background check, and pre-employment drug screening.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Position may require strenuous activities at times.
Supervision
The Equestrian Specialist is supervised by Sipe's Orchard Home's President or designee.
Job Responsibilities
- Instruct children and staff in the safe handling, care, and riding of horses.
- Care for and maintain the domestic animals at Sipe's Orchard Home (raising, grooming, feeding, exercising, breeding, training, registration, licensing, and scheduling of vet care).
- Maintain open communication with the supervisor and staff of each program concerning client behavior.
- Organize and schedule special riding events for clients.
- Supervise children assigned to the barn/livestock program as part of the work experience program.
- Work effectively with assigned volunteers.
- Monitor the barn, pastures, trails, fences, riding ring, and other equipment related to livestock and report any repair needs to the maintenance department.
- Attend staff meetings as requested.
Professional Development
Participate in all requested staff development programs at Sipe's Orchard Home.
